All About Recruiting and Selection (8.1)

Chapter 8 - Recruitment, Selection and Training of Workers

Learning Objective: To understand the difference between internal and external recruiting

The recruiting process is important for the success of a business - it is also costly and time consuming.

Recruitment can be done internally or externally:

Internal Recruitment happens when the business decides to choose someone who is already working in the company to take on the opened vacancy instead of picking someone from outside the business:

  • Quicker and cheaper than external;

  • Worker is familiar with the business (less time on adapting);

  • Business is familiar with the workers' strengths and weaknesses (better decision);

  • Workers are motivated when they see a chance for internal promotion.

There are some problems with Internal Recruiting though:

  • Limited pool of candidates to choose from;

  • There may be better suited candidates for the job outside the business;

  • Internal conflicts between workers may arise;

  • Outsiders bring new ideas and fresh perspectives into the business - which is limited by internal recruiting;

  • A vacancy will remain opened and external recruiting will still be needed for another position.

External Recruiting, on the other hand, happens when companies recruit outsiders to a fill out an opened vacancy. It can happen for different reasons:

  • Internal candidates are not skilled or experienced enough for the vacancy;

  • Business wants to have a larger pool of candidates to choose from;

  • A fast-growing business that constantly needs new recruits;

  • A business with a high turnover rate.

There are some advantages of External Recruiting:

  • New and fresh ideas come together with external recruits;

  • Wider range of candidates to choose from;

  • Avoids the possible internal conflicts of internal recruiting.

The problems with External Recruiting?

  • More time consuming than internal recruiting;

  • More expensive (ads, interviewing, etc.);

  • Cost of training new workers;

  • Demotivation of workers who think there are no opportunities for growing in the business.
