Lesson Objective: To understand the importance of having a motivated workforce
Motivation are the factors that influence the behavior of workers towards achieving objectives!
What do you think motivate people to work?
Money is indeed a motivator!
There are, however, other motivators out there that are not necessarily money:
Job security;
How interesting the work is (task variety);
Promotion opportunities;
Training;
Responsibility (decision-making);
Clean and safe workplace;
Friendship at work;
Fringe benefits (e.g. pension, health care, car, mobile phone.
Activity:
Divide the class into two groups: go out and ask the people working around the school what motivates them to come to work everyday (10 minutes).
Do you think that having a motivated workforce is beneficial to the business? How?
The quality of products and services increase when workers are more motivated;
Labour productivity increases: motivated workers produce more in less time (reducing average costs and increasing competitiveness);
Lower absenteeism: motivated workers are less likely to miss work for unjustifiable reasons;
Lower labour turnover: motivated workers are less likely to leave the company, which leads to lower costs of recruiting new workers.
Remember, business have objectives. Who do you think are responsible for working towards those objectives?
