Chapter 7 - Organization and Management
Learning Objective: To understand the importance and impact of trade unions
We will wrap up the topic of Organization Structure and Management by discussing a very delicate topic: Trade Unions:
In short, Trade Unions are organizations formed and financed by workers to protect their interests (e.g. wages, working conditions, etc.). Their activities include:
Negotiating better wages, working hours, conditions, holidays (collective bargaining) for their members;
Resolving conflicts with businesses on behalf of workers members;
Providing legal support and advice to help workers members to pursue their rights;
Providing services to members such as pension schemes and insurance schemes;
For workers, therefore, it's advantageous to be part of a Trade Union - it provides them with the power of collective bargaining and some degree of protection against businesses.
